We were recently contacted by the Better Business Bureau in regards to our position on charging insurance deductibles for claims caused by movers.
The British Columbia Motor Carrier Commission (BC MCC) issued a memo many years ago to moving companies of British Columbia. In that memo they stated that movers cannot charge an insurance deductible because this was something that only a licensed insurance company can do.
In our opinion if a mover damages or destroys something during the moving process, then provided that the consumer has declared a value for insurance purposes and has paid an administration fee for this declared value on their goods; and provided that the mover was negligible, the mover should either repair or replace the damaged item; depending of course on the type of coverage the consumer has. This process should not involve an insurance deductible fee.
Should movers be charging insurance deductibles? According to the BC MCC they should not.
Make sure you review your movers contract and make sure they do not have a clause with a fee for an insurance claim deductible.
For the record, Great Canadian Van Lines does have an insurance deductible fee clause in our contract.
As mentioned in our previous Blog, moving calculators generally do not calculate your carton count and distribution. To determine an accurate weight we have given you a standard distribution of cartons below for the average home.
(3000 lbs – 30 cartons) 10 x 2 cubes, 10 x 4 cubes, 3 x 5 cubes, 2 x 6 cubes, 1 small picture carton, 1 large picture, I china carton, 2 wardrobe cartons
(5000 lbs – 50 cartons) 15 x 2 cubes, 15 x 4 cubes, 6 x 5 cubes, 4 x 6 cubes, 2 small picture cartons, 2 large picture cartons, 2 china cartons, 4 wardrobe cartons
(7000 lbs – 75 cartons) 20 x 2 cubes, 20 x 4 cubes, 8 x 5 cubes, 6 x 6 cubes, 4 small picture cartons, 4 large picture cartons, 5 china cartons, 8 wardrobe cartons
(7000 lbs – 75 cartons) same as above
(10,000 lbs – 125 cartons) 35 x 2 cubes, 40 x 4 cubes, 15 x 5 cubes, 8 x 6 cubes, 5 small picture cartons, 5 large picture cartons, 7 china cartons, 10 wardrobe cartons
(13,000 lbs -150 cartons) 40 x 2 cubes, 40 x 4 cubes, 20 x 5 cubes, 10 x 6 cubes, 8 small picture cartons, 8 large picture cartons, 10 china cartons, 14 wardrobe cartons
(15,000 lbs – 175 cartons) 45 x 2 cubes, 45 x 4 cubes, 26 x 5 cubes, 12 x 6 cubes, 10 small picture cartons, 10 large picture cartons, 12 china cartons, 15 wardrobes
Determine your home size based on the information above, then enter the cartons based on the distribution above into the carton section of the Moving Calculator. This will give you an accurate list of cartons and will assist in providing a more accurate weight estimate of your shipment.

Most movers websites contain a moving calculator. This calculator basically adds up the dimensions of the items you are shipping and converts the measurments to weight.
What the calculator doesn’t do is determine your box count. This calcualtion is something you will have to enter yourself.
There is a simple formula to assist you with this calculation. Once you have entered your items into the calculator – the calculator will determine the estimated weight of your shipment, for example 5000 lbs.
To create a more accurate estimate add 10 boxes for every 1000 lbs. So in the sample above you will have approximately 50 boxes( 5000 / 1000 x 10 = 50)
The next step is to enter the boxes into the carton section of the calculator on the estimate form.
Watch for our next blog article – we will give you an idea of how to determine the distribution of these cartons.
