1. Canada Olympic park

Time to break out the skis and take on the same slopes the olympians of 1988 did. Olympic Park is a great destination for any avid skier or snowboarder. Thrillseekers are welcome to take a bobsleigh ride, driven by a professional, where riders experience speeds of up to 120km/h. If you’re looking for a thrill this winter, this is definitely one of the things to do in Calgary.

2. Horsin’ Around

Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride (anytime there is snow on the ground). It’s open Friday’s 1pm-8pm and 10am-5pm on weekends. The facility also has tobogganing and a petting zoo!

3. Zoo Lights

This family-friendly activity is one we strongly recommend. Take the family to the Calgary Zoo to take in over 1.5 million christmas lights. The Zoo Lights are open every day from 6pm until 9pm. So get some hot chocolate (available there) and take in the lights. This activity is $10 for adults and $7 for children, so it won’t break the bank.

4. Calgary Winter Festival (Fort Calgary)

Every year this 11-day festival, commemorating the 1988 Olympics, is held at Fort Calgary. It features a ton of entertainment and children’s activities. This is a must for families living in Calgary this winter.

5. Lake Louise Sculpture Competition

This isn’t your average sculpture competition. 12 teams from allover the world congregate to sculpt 300 pounds of ice, each. They have three days to turn blocks of ice into pieces of art. This event is held in the Samson Mall (Lake Louise Village).

6. Tobogganing

Winter and tobogganing go together like cookies and milk in Canada. There are a ton of great hills all around the city. If you have small children, our favorite spot is Nose Hill Park which has some more manageable hills. This makes winter fun and affordable for everyone, so it is for sure one of the things to do in Calgary, and every city that has snow!
