Canuck Place

canuck placeCanuck Place Children’s Hospice provides specialized pediatric palliative care for children living with a life-threatening illness and support for their families throughout British Columbia.

They are an inter-disciplinary team – consisting of a diverse group of healthcare professionals, support staff and volunteers, who provide 24-hour/7-days a week care and support.

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your generous support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation this past year. You are providing hope for BC’s kids and families when they need it most, in impactful and meaningful ways.

Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been so inspired to see the ways our community of supporters rallied together with urgency and compassion to shape a healthier future for children and families across BC. You’ve made so many life-changing advances possible for all of them.

Today, I am delighted to share with you a digital version of our 2020/21 Progress Report—a year-in-review summary of advances in groundbreaking research, state-of-the-art technology and equipment, and clinical care that your commitment has supported. This digital report also includes inspiring video stories of hope and healing from families across the province. Stories that might not have had the same outcomes if not for your generosity.

As you’ll read in our report, you’ve made so many strides in children’s healthcare possible. Here are just a few of those ways:
I hope you will enjoy this digital Progress Report, as well as the printed version you will receive in the mail, if you haven’t already. Later this summer, my colleagues at the Foundation will connect with you to hear any feedback you may have on which format you may wish to receive in the future.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

With gratitude,

Malcolm Berry

Thank you for caring for children and families at Canuck Place!

Dear Mark,

I am so heartened by the incredible outpouring of support. As the new Chief Executive Officer of Canuck Place, I am so inspired by the community that ensures 24-7 complex care is made possible in our hospices and in the homes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

On behalf of our talented clinical team of nurses, physicians, counsellors, and recreation therapists thank you for contributing to the Light a Life campaign. Over $900,000 was raised from over 3,000 individual donors so Canuck Place can continue to provide pediatric palliative care. Canuck Place celebrates our Light a Life partner, John & Claire Nicola and Friends, who generously matched $300,000.

This collaboration demonstrates that when we all work toward a common goal during challenging times, Canuck Place can care for families like the Archambault-Larosas through every step of their journey.

What we have learned during the last year is that we must continue to care for one another. Thank you for your continued care of Canuck Place children and families.

Wishing you and your loved ones resilience and a safe 2021.

With my deepest gratitude,

Dr. Tarnia Taverner PhD. MSc. RN.
Chief Executive Officer

Dear Mark,

On behalf of the team at Canuck Place, I wanted to take a moment this Thanksgiving to thank you for your incredible support. We could not do what we do at Canuck Place without you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

This year has been very difficult for everyone. This pandemic has shown us all the importance of our mental health, being connected to family, and our general well-being. For the 818 children with life-threatening illnesses and families in our care, COVID-19 has further disrupted lives that are already deeply impacted by uncertainty.

At Canuck Place we can’t add days to the life of a child, but we can add life to their days. Your support allows us to provide world-leading pediatric palliative care where and when it is needed the most. This includes medical respite care in our two hospices, end-of-life care, grief, loss, and bereavement counselling, and so much more. All at no cost to families.

As medical director of Canuck Place for 19 out of our hospice’s 25 years, the children and families I care for have taught me to honour precious moments of being together. On this Thanksgiving, I hope you’ll join all of us at Canuck Place in savouring every moment and connecting with those you love in the best way that you can.

With gratitude for all that you do, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving.
