Great Canadian Van Lines was conceived in the late 1980’s and was incorporated in Alberta in 1990. Mark Valliant, President of Great Canadian Van Lines was one of the original start up partners of the company and had many previous years experience working in the moving industry. The original partners saw a need for change and an opportunity in the long distance moving business in Canada and for this reason the company was formed.  For logistic reasons the head office of the company was relocated to the Vancouver area in 1992 and continues in that marketplace today. Mark’s brother Rick joined the firm as a partner in the early 1990’s and Mark’s wife Jodi joined the operation in the early part of 2000.

The original partners recognized that there were similarities and problems in the operations of the existing van lines in Canada; and for this reason a necessity for change and improvement was needed to ensure consumers were provided with a better overall moving service. We reviewed our competitors businesses, recognized similarities and determined that there were 3 key fundamental customer service related components missing or requiring change in their models. Great Canadian decided it was time for change in the industry and focused on these three key fundamental changes:
  1. Better Value – We determined that both the pricing and rating structure for long distance moves needed to be changed, and so we developed a simpler Tariff and offered better rates and service.

  2. Transit Times – We determined that customers were waiting too long for their goods to arrive, and so we shortened the delivery periods, offered more direct routes with less stops and shortened our transit times.

  3. Reduction in Claim Ratios – When we changed the rating structure, we also changed the distribution of revenue. More revenue was paid to the drivers by way of the valuation premium. Drivers became 100 % responsible for any damage they caused, but were paid the valuation premium. The result is that they take better care of your goods because they are paid to do so.

Better Value, Transit Times and Low Claim Ratios are what differentiates Great Canadian Van Lines from the other movers in the industry. We developed our business on these principles in the late 1980’s and continue to operate our business with them today.
